Inheritance tax liability by region

The TaxPayers’ Alliance has today released a new map showing how average inheritance tax liabilities have soared across the UK, with some regions seeing increases of over 1000 per cent in just two years. Based on official HMRC data, the map compares average estimated inheritance tax bills in 2020-21 and 2022-23, exposing the growing burden on bereaved families. This follows our new 'Inheritance Tax: All You Need To Know' factbook, which offers a comprehensive breakdown of the tax and its reach.

The number of estates liable for inheritance tax jumped by 13 per cent in just one year. From 26,000 in 2020-21 to 29,000 in 2021-22, as more families are dragged into the net thanks to frozen thresholds and rising house prices.

This comes amidst TaxPayers’ Alliance polling, which shows that inheritance tax is Britain’s most hated tax, with overwhelming public support for cutting or scrapping it altogether. With average bills rising sharply, public opposition growing, and no adjustment to thresholds since 2009, calls for reform are only getting louder.
