TaxPayers’ Alliance responds to Reform’s plans to overhaul local government pension funds

For immediate release

Responding to Reform’s plans to overhaul local government pension funds, John O’Connell, chief executive of the TaxPayers' Alliance, said:

“It will delight local taxpayers to see a major political party shine a light on the shocking mismanagement of local government pension funds.

“The fees involved, and the mix of assets owned by these schemes have been rightly called out by Reform UK. But this is still insufficiently radical given the continuing commitment to gold-plated, defined benefit schemes which ultimately are underwritten by taxpayers.

“Reform UK should go further and pledge to also move all new local government employees onto fully-funded defined contribution schemes, like is the case in most of the private sector.”
